Hot off the press

After much anticipation, the second issue of The Muslim Voice has been finally released. One glance at the glossy cover will reveal the wait has been well worth it. Not to give you any spoilers, but the layout is beyond cool.
Copies are available at the International Student Centre, the Bahen prayer space, the Sussex Club House and the MSA Office (21 Sussex Ave., Suite 405), and after Jumuah prayers at Hart House. And be sure to come back here and voice your approval or disapproval. An email to the editor would work as well - muslimvoice@yahoo.ca.
perhaps we should have a section of the blog dedicated to the tmv, where the articles are posted (after the print copies are distributed) so that ppl can discuss the content. some of the better articles usually generate discussion on campus, and it would be great for community-building purposes if there was a real forum for discussion. plus, it could add to the vibrancy of this blog
maybe in the next tmv, there could be an ad/notice telling ppl to head to blog. the two should complement each other.
another random suggestion for the blog: it may be a good idea to add a blogroll with links to blogs of msa members - it could generate more traffic.
The TMV looks great. My favourite article, by far, is the one about Umrah by Safiyyah. Coming in close behind is the one about prophet Ayyub (as) by Afroza. I hope that the next one comes out soon.
my layout team did an excellent job and i had the great help of two execs who got me some articles. the editorial could have used some work…like be redone, but anyway. In line with Idrees’ comment, there needs to be a lot of synchronization with what the TMV publishes and what the MSA does, but why that isn’t the case is beyond me, especially when deadlines arrive.

that was a good article you had safiyyah. i think i sent you an email about it with a poem from rumi, i dont know if you got it?
i was just thinking. going for umrah/hajj is an existential enactment of the saying ‘die before you die.’ why else would you go to hajj dressed in a shroud? the wise one goes to hajj and returns as a ‘no one’. the fool returns as a ’some one.’
also, talking to people after they return from hajj/umrah they often mention how their ordinary mundane lives (9-5 work,etc) seem so meaningless and trivial in relation to their experiences at mecca and medina. one could say that the two cities are so infused with the perfume of the sacred that when one leaves them for their ‘hometown’ one realizes how far off ‘heaven’ and ‘earth’ must be in reality.

I’m sorry to admit that I didn’t read Aasim Hasany’s article. I saw the picture of the flame and read the word “theomorphic” in the first sentence, and decided I was thoroughly scared.
Maybe we can make our articles more…”approachable”

I just read my article in the TMV for the first time and I was dismayed to notice some spelling/grammatical errors that weren’t there when I wrote that article! A few examples will suffice: the editor changed the sentence ‘poring through the pages of the Quran’ to ‘pouring’, and ‘amidst the hordes of people’ to ‘hoards’. Also, dhikr is explained in brackets as ‘reference to God’. I’m a little confused, I must say. I like the original better.
Safiyyah, the changes made make sense…
This is the same editor who would conquer with your concerns. (I know it’s spelled concur, but that’s the way he spells it)

I think the blog should be updated. It doesn’t have to be about MSA events only. Come on, put something interesting up! Grr!

Just want to make a point on proofreading stuff,
in the article “prohetic akhlaq” by Ashiq Alibhai,
it states that Umar ibn Al-Khattab “…and a big, scary-looking guy…”
The noble companion ‘Umar RA was not a scary looking guy. Please contact Br. Ashiq Alibhai and let him know that. He may make that mistake again. Perceptions of certain companions should not be result in conclusions about how they looked and so on. He may not know that he made this mistake.
But I think it’s a big mistake and it can easily be repeated because ppl [subconciously] may draw unreasonable conclusions.
